- " Useful Tips On Office Feng Shui"

Commercial Feng Shui

External Environment

1) If a company has decided on a potential office space, it is crucial to study the topography of the area to assess the types of destructive energy (such as hostile looking hills, bridges, road patterns and water pollution etc.) that is present in the surroundings. Environmental sha qi are usually difficult to cure with feng shui placements and costly to find a remedy.

2) Company should avoid buying or renting an office space or retail outlet that is in close proximity to the:

a) Power transmitter tower, telecommunication station or satellite disc.
b) Police station or military camp
c) Hospital, mortuary, crematorium and funeral parlours
d) Overhead expressway or train tracks
e) Places of worship
f) Cemetery
g) T-junction

Such places tend to generate negative energy that would affect the qi of the surrounding area.

3) In addition to having a good feng shui and an auspicious orientation, a shop or retail outlet must:

a) Have good infrastructure (like roads, transportation, telecommunication and amenities). In feng shui roads are like rivers, which bring along trade, human traffic and business income.
b) Have good shop frontage and attractive window dressings to attract customers.
c) Be easily accessible and have sufficient parking space.
d) Be located in a flourishing business district that has good human traffic. In today’s highly competitive market, shops and retail outlets that do not have constant human flow will find difficulty in making profits.
e) Select a location or office building that fit or complement the type of business and trade.

The Fountain of Wealth at Suntec, which was built in accordance to the feng shui principles of water placement, the five elements and numerology has attracted many shoppers every year. The surrounding office buildings have been built to look like the palm of the hand with the fountain at the centre to symbolize the accumulation and retention of wealth. >>

A shop or retail outlet does not have good feng shui if customers have difficulty in locating the premises.

4) A company should avoid buying or renting office space that has sharp hostile structures pointing directly at its unit or at the main door of the building. Overlooking a pointed structure that looks like a sha qi will cause uneasiness, which will subconsciously affect one’s mental well- being, thus, leading to poor performance, bad judgment and decisions. Unsound decisions will result in financial losses.

5) The element (shape) of office building of your choice should be supported by the elements of the surrounding buildings. Choosing an office building that blends harmoniously with the surrounding architectures and be supported by their elements would create a productive cycle of the 5 elements signifying inexhaustible wealth and prosperity. Buildings that have regular shapes (round, square and rectangular) are considered auspicious, as the qi is more balanced and harmonious. On the contrary, a building with sharp pointed designs tend to be viewed as a form of sha qi and therefore receive unpleasant comments and feng shui remedies from its neighbouring buildings.

6) If water features (such as river, sea or swimming pool) can be seen from the office, one should check the direction, shape, size and cleanliness of the water. If you are thinking of building a water features to beautify your office, it is essential to bear in mind the following guidelines:

a) The water feature must not be too big that seems to overwhelm the qi of the premises.
b) The water feature must have an auspicious shape and design. Water feature with round curvy corners or kidney shape is preferred.
c) Polluted and foul smelling water will affect the luck and health of the occupants.

In period 8 (2004 – 2024), it is generally auspicious to have water feature in the southwest and east sector. In feng shui, these 2 locations are known as the Ling Shen and Chui Guan Shui. However, a correct water placement theory should take into consideration the facing of the premises, the natal chart of the premises and one’s 4 pillars of destiny.

Most people have the misconception that by placing a water feature in their premises it will naturally enhance their personal and business luck. Unfortunately, if one’s 4 pillars of destiny or destiny cycle does not favour the water element, the placement of a big water feature (like a fountain, waterfall or pond etc.) in the premises tends to do more harm than good.

7) The company should avoid buying or renting office building that is sandwiched between two taller or larger buildings. People who worked in such an office building tend to feel oppressed in their career advancement and face difficulties in receiving job recognition or support from their superiors.

Internal Environment

1) As the entrance is the “mouth” of the office where external qi enters the premises, a well-designed and grand entrance will attract more business flow as compared to a narrow one. In choosing the size of the main door, it is crucial that the door must not be too big and should fit and suits the size of the premises. Main door with weird designs and colour should be avoided.

In ancient China, main doors were often built in accordance to the auspicious measurements of a feng shui ruler to harness auspicious qi.

2) Avoid cluttering the entrance with obstructive furniture or objects. External qi should be allowed to flow freely through the main door and circulate within the premises. However, if the main door of the office has a direct path to the rear door or a full glass window, one may build a wooden panel “Xuan Guan” near the entrance to prevent the qi from rushing out of the premises. The building of a “Xuan Guan” is an art, which serve to deflect destructive energy, improve the route of movement into the office and to enhance the qi of the main entrance.

A well-designed reception area will also project the corporate image and professionalism of the company.

3) The seating arrangement in the office should allow easy movement between the different departments. A poor arrangement or selection of furniture will disrupt the flow of qi causing friction between the staff, hence, reducing productivity. In the office, an auspicious desk position and good seating position will:

a) Enhance the command and control of the managers.
b) Increase concentration, ideas and creativity.
c) Reduce fatigue and job absenteeism.

4) In office feng shui, senior managers and key departments should be located in their auspicious sectors to ensure business success. In the 8-mansion school, the individual auspicious directions are derived from a person’s year of birth.

Managers should sit and face their auspicious directions to harness positive qi. If possible, one should sit supported by a solid wall and overlooking the door. Being able to see those who enters the door prevents one from being attack from the back, thus, reducing office politics and improve the command and control of the staff. Generally, managers should avoid:

a) Sitting directly facing the office door or underneath an overhead beam or staircase.
b) Sitting overlooking a sharp structure from the environment.
c) Locating one’s office next to the power room, toilet or pantry.

5) The interior decor of the office or retail outlet should reflect the corporate image, culture and trade of the business. A harmonious and conducive working environment will generate life energy “Sheng Qi”, which in turn promote staff creativity, interaction, business flow and reduces staff antagonism, absenteeism and unsound decisions.

6) The overall qi and corporate image of the office (like the showroom, meeting room, staff uniform and salesmanship etc.) will determine the success rate of closing a sale when the customer visit the office or shop. Company with strong qi will instill consumer confidence.

7) The furnishing of the meeting room should be simple and bright to promote staff concentration and encourage exchange of ideas. During important meetings, fresh flowers may be placed in the meeting room to energize life energy. Companies that decorate their premises with flowers must replace withering plants on a regular basis to upkeep the sheng qi of the premises.

8) Offices and retail outlets that operate daytime businesses should ensure that their premises are well lit to energize yang qi. A bright and tastefully decorated retail outlet will create a sense of orderliness, taste and quality, thus, attracting more customers. On the other hand, nighttime businesses (like restaurants, pubs and discos) may select warmer furnishing and lights to create a cozier ambience to suit the relaxing mood of the patrons. A correct application of Yin Yang qi in the premises is able to create the right atmosphere to enhance the attractiveness of its products and services.

9) As the company logo is a corporate identity of a business enterprise, it is important that the design of the company logo should have an auspicious shape and colour to support the element of the industry. A well-designed company logo will not only leave a good lasting impression but should also fit the nature of the business, that is, the firm’s product and services. An auspicious logo should have good colour schemes, shapes and symbols to support the element of the industry. Placing the company logo in a suitable location will create a visual impact, which will enhance market profile and increase profitability. To cite an example, shipping companies may use symbols of ships or waves as a basis for company logo.

If one has the intention of having the feng shui of his office evaluated, it should preferably be done before the commencement of any renovation works. The selection of an auspicious day and direction for groundbreaking will prevent the knocking of the inauspicious stars (such as the Grand Duke, 3 killings and 5 Yellow etc.), that may result in a series of misfortunes and disrupt the smooth operation of a business. Similarly, it is also a common practice for firms to select an auspicious day for their official opening ceremony where important guests are invited to the new premises.
